Spring wildflowers around Willapa Bay

Where to look for spring wildflowers around Willapa Bay: Willapa National Wildlife Refuge trails and Leadbetter Point State Park, with refuge hours, closures, and rules from official sources.

Willapa Bay is better known for birds and oysters than flowers, but spring brings color here too. This page sticks to what the managing agencies say. You won’t find bloom calendars or flower lists here that the agencies don’t publish. Treat it as a guide to good places to walk in spring, with flowers as a bonus.

Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes spring at the refuge as the season when “wildflowers flourish and wildlife begin to emerge from their winter hideaways” (USFWS — Willapa species). The refuge’s wildlife-watching page notes plants to see in every season, from small flowering plants such as trilliums to old-growth cedar, and lots of ferns thanks to the heavy rainfall (USFWS — Wildlife watching).

  • Hours: refuge trails are open every day from sunrise to sunset. The headquarters office is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, closed on federal holidays.
  • Where: USFWS lists trailheads off Sandridge Road on the Long Beach Peninsula: Tarlatt Slough and South Bay trails (from 95th Place) and the Porter Point Loop (from 67th Place, at headquarters). The Art Trail and Cutthroat Climb are near milepost 24 on US 101.
  • Note: part of the Parker Slough Trail is closed October 1 to February 10, so it reopens before spring.

Leadbetter Point State Park

Washington State Parks lists seasonal wildflowers among Leadbetter Point’s park features. In summer, the park forest also has western tanagers, warblers, and black-headed grosbeaks. The day-use park is open 6:00 a.m. to dusk year-round, has 7 miles of trails, and requires a Discover Pass (WA State Parks — Leadbetter Point).

Spring closure to know about: USFWS says that each year from March 15 to September 15, part of Leadbetter Point is closed to all public entry, including on foot, to protect nesting western snowy plovers. Obey the posted signs. USFWS also notes the Leadbetter trails are often flooded from October to May, so bring boots (USFWS — Rules and policies).

Look, don’t pick

Refuge and park plants are protected habitat. Stay on trails, leave flowers where they grow, and take photos instead. Drones are prohibited on all national wildlife refuges.
